#Who's Who of B and B

If The Hat Fits

September 16, 2017

My mother loved to work in the yard.  She always had a bountiful garden and her yard had plenty of curb appeal.  It looked natural and comfortable, but she worked hard at it.  Her yard-work uniform consisted of long pants and sweatshirts and a matching hat.  If her pants were purple, then her sweatshirt was purple and her hat was purple.  Also, as she would work in her garden, she would get a sunburn, which would turn into a tan line.  It was right at the lower back where her shirt would come up and her pants would go down as she was bending over weeding or whatever she was up to.

Several years ago I put in our first garden.  It was one of my projects as a Young Women's leader.  I was working on my Faith project and thought what better way to demonstrate faith than to plant a seed and watch it grow.  Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, "Oh, no, I am becoming my mother?"  Well, that happened to me one night as I was taking a shower and looked in the mirror and I had a sunburn.  Guess where?!  Yep, right there on my lower back.  I could just see my mother in that mirror.

Now, about 10 years after that glimpse of my mother in me, we are busy getting ready for our daughter's wedding.   Before we knew there was going to be a wedding we had dug a HUGE hole in our backyard for a swimming pool.  That meant we had to move our septic tank, which required another huge hole in another part of the yard.  Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), our yard was a mess.  We probably could have taken another year or so to make it look okay.  We live at the end of a cul de sac and are hidden back behind some trees. But now we have the pressure of a rehearsal dinner at our house with just a few family members and out of town guests.  The number keeps changing, but last count it was about 64 people.

The backyard looks better than it ever has - especially with my pool sitting there.  But the front/side yard has some issues.  Although My Mr. B has become a great gardener, he's not really so interested in flower beds.  We have two that really need some help.  They are the first thing you see as you drive up to the house.

At the end of the driveway.

Isn't that just pitiful?!!  I kept asking, "Can't we just get a professional to come out and plant something?"  My Mr. B doesn't like to spend money on things we can do ourselves.  And, of course, he's right.

So we called in our friends that know a bunch about plants and flowers to help us.  My Mr. B gives me a hard time, because I dug out my mother's hats to wear as I work in the yard.  They have a really big brim and keep the sun out of my face.  My Mr. B asked my friend if she wanted to wear one, and her response was, "I would love to."

So here we are with our hats.  We're not as color coordinated as my mother was - our clothes are not all the same color.  And I will tell you I don't (can't) bend over like I used to, so I don't think that back tan line will appear again.  But I will tell you these hats are awesome and I love wearing them.

Here is mom in one of her hats.  These are not her gardening/working clothes.  She had her everyday work hats, and then she had the ones she saved to wear out.  This was mom and my pop going to the horse races.  I think she looks rather fetching.  She's rocking that hat a lot more than I ever will.

Now I have to get back to the yard.  Thanks for coming along down my memory lane.  And if you're in the neighborhood, we could use your help in the flower beds.  I even have a few more of mom's hats.  What color would you like - green, purple, or white?
