Are you a Hoarder or just messy? [quiz]

April 11, 2018

I'm starting to feel like a Hoarder.

We're putting wood floors down in two bedrooms upstairs.  The Stuff has to go somewhere - luckily we have a bonus room to pile it in.  And this is after a previous de-junking.  More to come . . .

I don't have to show you real pictures of a hoarder home.  You've seen them or maybe you have one in the family.  Hoarding animals isn't uncommon, either.  It's a touchy situation mentally, physically, and emotionally.  I recently learned you can't help a hoarder - like you would want to.

How do you go through layers and layers of living . . . piles and piles of the forgotten?  Where did it all start?  Generally, it stems from a loss, either temporally or emotionally and needs to be treated with therapy for long term results.

Tell-Tale Signs of Hoarding:
  • Compulsively accumulates items - often duplicates
  • Refuses to eliminate items - even when they are of no use anymore
  • Home is so cluttered the person can't live comfortably or is squeezed out by possessions.
  • Clutter impacts a person's health and safety.
  • A person can't declutter (categorize, purge, re-arrange) a room in a few hours or a day.
  • Often times the person doesn't sleep in their own bed, sit on the sofa or at the kitchen table.
When you saw this cartoon on Facebook
did you laugh, nod your head, shake your  head and then shudder?

For fun and reflection, take this quiz:  How much of a hoarder are you?

Here is a sampling of things you may have:
  • You still have all your High School yearbooks.
  • You still have birthday cards that used to sing Happy Birthday and now make garbled ghost screams.
  • You still have your Field Day Participation Award ribbons.
  • You still have VHS tapes.
  • You still have Beanie Babies in case they become valuable again.
  • You bought a piece of furniture for the express purpose of storing crap on top of it or in it.
  • You have a stack of magazines dating back a few years.
  • You have clothing you haven't worn in 5 years.
  • You have a plastic bag full of plastic bags.
  • You  have a pile of miscellaneous items you refer to as "the pile".
  • You still have your childhood gerbil in a cigar box coffin.

Okay, maybe you're just messy.  We can help with that.  Take our 2018 "live like you're moving" challenge.  A year from now you will be glad you did.
